The landscape watercolors of Genaro Pérez Villaamil occupy a fundamental place within the romantic landscape in Spain, as much for their artistic quality as for their role in the diffusion of a poetic and monumental image of the territory. In them, Villaamil develops an idealized vision of the landscape, where architecture, nature and atmosphere merge in compositions of great lyricism, often inspired by historical or picturesque settings. The watercolor technique allowed him to work quickly and freely, capturing light effects, changing skies and a certain atmospheric vibration that reinforces the evocative character of his scenes.
Genaro Pérez Villaamil was the main representative of romantic landscape painting in Spain. After joining the liberal army in 1823, he was wounded and taken prisoner in Cadiz, where he trained at the Academy of Fine Arts. He soon achieved recognition and, after a trip to Puerto Rico, he returned to Spain in 1833, a key year in which he met David Roberts, who had a decisive influence on his romantic style. Settled in Madrid since 1834, he developed a successful career, being named academician of San Fernando and honorary chamber painter. Between 1840 and 1844 he traveled around Europe and published in Paris his work España artística y monumental, one of the great publications of romanticism. He received important international distinctions and became director and professor of landscape painting at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando.
His work evolved from an initial eclectic stage towards a fully romantic landscape painting, influenced by the British tradition, characterized by monumental views, historical architecture and dramatic atmospheres. He was also a pioneer in Spain in the introduction of Orientalism. His works are preserved in institutions such as the Prado Museum and other important collections.
