This suggestive view of the Roman countryside of Auguste Anastasi is inscribed in the French landscape tradition, marked by the influence of the school of Barbizon and the interest for the poetic representation of nature. The artist combines with remarkable sensitivity the monumentality of the classical ruins with the serenity of the landscape, creating a scene of great compositional balance and atmospheric depth.
The warm light, which bathes the foreground and dissolves in the distance, structures the composition and accentuates the contrast between the ruined architecture and the vastness of the horizon. The small figures introduce a narrative dimension that anchors the scene in the everyday, while the evocation of Rome and its past brings a timeless evocative character.
Auguste Anastasi was a landscape painter linked to the aesthetics of the Barbizon school. He trained with Eugène Delacroix, Paul Delaroche and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot.
He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon, where he won several medals, and also excelled as a lithographer, contributing to the diffusion of contemporary artists. Throughout his career he traveled through France, Italy, Holland and Brittany, finding in Rome and the Italian countryside an essential source of inspiration.
From the 1860s onwards, his production was affected by a progressive loss of vision that culminated in total blindness in 1870. Despite this, his work enjoyed recognition during his lifetime, being distinguished as a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1868. After his death, he left a legacy destined to support artists in difficulties, consolidating his figure as an outstanding representative of the European landscape of the 19th century.
