BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Dutch school of the nineteenth century. Follower of DAVID TENIERS II (Antwerp, 1610 - Brussels, 1690).
Pair of "Peasant scenes".
Oil on panel.
Measurements: 17 x 21 cm, 34 x 38 cm (frame) each.

Pair of rural scenes inspired by the Flemish costumbrista tradition of the 17th century, especially in the models developed by David Teniers the Younger. The compositions represent small groups of peasants next to popular constructions and open landscapes treated with a warm and luminous atmosphere.

During the 19th century, the recovery of Flemish and Dutch models of the Golden Age was very frequent, especially genre scenes set in villages and taverns, destined for European bourgeois collectors. Many artists made reinterpretations and recreations inspired by Baroque masters, maintaining a taste for anecdotal scenes, rural landscapes and popular figures.

The works present several characteristic features of this tradition: peasant architecture, small-format figures, golden light and a simple and balanced composition. The atmospheric treatment of the landscape and the picturesque character of the scenes clearly refer to the influence of Teniers and Flemish genre painting.
