BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

HENRI LE JEUNE (London, 1819 - 1904).
"Meditation".
Oil on panel.
Without signature.
Measurements: 20 x 26 cm, 40,5 x 45,5 cm (frame).

The work represents a female portrait of intimate and melancholic character, set in a twilight landscape of warm tones and silent atmosphere. The figure appears in the foreground, leaning on a stony surface and with her hands intertwined, looking at the viewer with a serene and reflective expression. The mountainous landscape in the background, treated in a soft and diffuse way, contributes to reinforce the emotional and contemplative tone of the composition.

The painting is related to the British artistic sensibility of the Victorian period, especially interested in idealized portraits and scenes with a strong sentimental and psychological charge. During the second half of the 19th century, many English artists developed compositions where the female figure acquired a poetic and symbolic character, influenced by both Romanticism and Pre-Raphaelite painting.

Henry Le Jeune stood out precisely for his portraits and historical scenes of elegant and academic tone. His painting combines a refined treatment of flesh tones and faces with an introspective atmosphere and a special care for the emotional expression of the figures. The warm illumination and the delicacy of the modeling present in this work fully respond to this Victorian pictorial tradition.

The female figure is treated with idealization and sobriety, moving away from the strictly realistic portrait to a more evocative and literary image, a frequent feature in English painting of the period. The interest in the emotional landscape and the silent expression of the character also connects with the late romantic taste developed in Victorian England.
