DESCRIPTION

EUGENIO LUCAS VILLAMIL (Madrid, 1858 - 1918).
"Don Quixote.
Oil on panel.
Signed in the lower left corner.
Measurements: 16 x 11 cm, 29.5 x 25.5 cm (frame).

The work represents the bust of Don Quixote, the famous character created by Miguel de Cervantes, identified by his gaunt features, his thin mustache and his expression between idealistic and self-absorbed. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat and a green vest over a light shirt, the character appears slightly turned, as if absorbed in his own inner world. The figure emerges strongly from a dark background, resolved by means of a loose, fast and vibrant brushstroke, where the forms are built more by spots of color than by linear definition.

Created by Eugenio Lucas Villamil, the painting embodies a profoundly expressive interpretation of the nobleman from La Mancha. Far from a detailed narrative or literary representation, the artist chooses to capture the psychological essence of the character: his idealism, his eccentric character and his almost tragic dimension. The sketchy technique and the enveloping atmosphere reinforce this reading, connecting with the pictorial tradition inherited from Francisco de Goya, where the important thing is not formal precision but emotional intensity.

Eugenio Lucas Villamil (Madrid, 1858-1918), son of Eugenio Lucas Velázquez, developed a work deeply marked by Goya's legacy. His painting is characterized by the freedom of the brushstroke, the taste for the expressive and a special attention to popular types and figures of the Spanish imaginary. In this context, the figure of Don Quixote becomes a particularly significant motif: not only as a literary icon, but also as a symbol of an idealistic, contradictory Spain, deeply rooted in its cultural tradition. Villamil, heir to that sensibility, represents him not as an epic hero, but as a human figure, fragile and dreamy, captured with immediacy and great evocative force.
