DESCRIPTION

CARLOS MARÍA LEZCANO (Madrid, 1871 - 1929).
"Patio", Granada.
Oil on canvas.
Signed and located in the lower right corner. Signed on the stretcher frame.
Measurements: 55 x 40 cm, 69 x 65 cm (frame).

The work represents a luminous garden corner of Mediterranean architecture, articulated around a pergola covered with vegetation and a narrow entrance in shade that contrasts with the intense sunlight of the patio. The composition stands out for the prominence of plants and flowers, treated with a lively and spontaneous brushstroke that conveys atmospheric freshness and a sense of domestic intimacy.

The painting is related to the Spanish luminist and costumbrista tradition of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, especially linked to the interest in Andalusian courtyards, gardens and urban corners bathed in the light of the south. During this period, many Spanish artists developed a style of painting centered on lighting effects, color and the friendly representation of everyday spaces, influenced by both impressionism and decorative regionalism.

Carlos María Lezcano especially cultivated this type of intimate and landscape compositions, where popular architecture and vegetation acquire a strong atmospheric value. His works stand out for the use of a warm and luminous palette, as well as an agile brushstroke capable of capturing the changing effects of natural light.

The interest in courtyards, gardens and traditional corners also responded to the rise of Spanish artistic regionalism at the beginning of the 20th century, when many painters sought to reflect the visual and cultural identity of different Spanish regions through decorative and genre scenes for both national and international collectors.

The present work clearly shows this luminist sensibility: the shadows cast by the pergola, the contrast between sun and shadow and the ornamental prominence of the flowers construct a serene and refined scene, very representative of Spanish decorative painting at the turn of the century.
