BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

ARTHUR TREVOT HADDON (1864 - 1941).
"Courtyard", Granada.
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 104 x 83 cm. 124 x 103 cm. (frame).

The work represents a lively urban scene set in a Mediterranean street, where several female figures and popular characters are distributed around a public fountain and a narrow alley crossed by an architectural arch. The luminosity of the composition, the picturesque architecture and the presence of popular characters fully reflect the orientalist and costumbrist taste developed by many British and European painters between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Arthur Trevor Haddon was a British artist especially known for his scenes set in Spain, Italy and other Mediterranean enclaves, treated with an idealized and luminous vision highly appreciated by international collectors of the time. His works often combine historical architecture, popular scenes and elegantly characterized female figures, within a friendly and decorative atmosphere.

During this period, many British painters traveled throughout southern Europe, attracted by the light, color and exoticism of Spanish and Italian cities. These urban and genre scenes responded to the romantic and orientalist interest in environments considered picturesque and traditional in the face of the industrial modernity of northern Europe.

The composition stands out for its warm luminosity, the loose brushstrokes and the careful treatment of the architecture and figures. The artist builds a scene full of daily life and visual appeal, where the Mediterranean urban space acquires a strong scenographic prominence.
