Mir was shaping a personal language bequeathing us a singularly modern work, based on a new vision of the landscape, as in this rural canvas of daring palette and audacious formal simplification. The light of the Ebro and the Mediterranean landscape is key in Miravet's works.
Joaquín Mir was trained in Barcelona, but soon rejected realist academic teaching and founded the "Colla del Safrà" in 1893 to explore new artistic currents. He participated in exhibitions and frequented the avant-garde environment of "Els Quatre Gats", where he developed his style. After failing to obtain a scholarship in Rome, he traveled to Mallorca with Santiago Rusiñol, a key experience that transformed his painting: he adopted a freer style, with intense colors and brushstrokes that blur the forms. Later, after an illness, he settled in Tarragona, where he continued to focus on landscape painting. Throughout his career he received numerous awards, such as the National Prize of Fine Arts in 1917, and achieved great recognition in Spain and abroad. He is considered the main representative of Spanish post-impressionist landscape painting, and his work is preserved in important museums such as the Prado, the Reina Sofia and the MNAC.
