BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

ARMAND ÉTIENNE BRACONY (Paris, 1825-1894).
"Jesus healing the blind".
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 64 x 81 cm; 86 x 104 cm (frame).

The episode of "Jesus healing the blind" works here more as a pretext than as a central theme, giving way to the representation of an idealized Roman landscape, dominated by imposing classical ruins. In this serene setting, bathed in the evening light, various figures deal with everyday scenes, creating an idyllic atmosphere. The composition is part of the tradition of Italianate caprices, which emerged in Italy in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, where two great landscape models coexisted: on the one hand, the Venetian veduta of Canaletto and his circle, and on the other, a landscape of classicist roots inherited from the Carracci and developed in a monumental and architectural sense by Claudio de Lorena. The latter gives rise to a heroic landscape, which experienced a renewed boom thanks to the wide dissemination of engravings with views of cities, both real and imagined, where the past and the present were evoked under the protagonism of classical architecture, as in this canvas. The interest in the vestiges of the past, the rise of travel by artists and writers in search of inspiration and the discovery of archaeological sites such as Pompeii and Herculaneum contributed decisively to the success of the capriccio genre, whose roots go back to the 17th century and to the veduta, sometimes not topographical and often markedly imaginative, practiced by Canaletto and other artists.

Armand Étienne Bracony was a painter who specialized in Romantic-style landscapes, often with human figures; he began his career as a copyist at the Louvre Museum, which allowed him to train from great masters, and later developed his own work, even exhibiting at the Paris Salon between 1847 and 1877, although today he is not a well-known artist and his production appears mainly on the auction market and private collections.
