The Catalan school of painting of the 19th century was one of the most important artistic movements in Spain and was characterized by its great technical quality, the European influence -especially from Paris and Rome- and a strong relationship with the bourgeoisie and the modernization of Barcelona. Many works featured popular Catalan figures with barretina, a symbol of identity and the traditions of the country, especially in genre and rural scenes. Painting evolved from historical romanticism to realism and modernism, incorporating landscapes, urban scenes, portraits and popular customs, with special attention to light and Mediterranean color. Among its most outstanding artists were Marià Fortuny, famous for his virtuosity and orientalism; Joaquim Vayreda, promoter of Olot's landscape painting; and, at the end of the century, Santiago Rusiñol and Ramon Casas, representatives of Catalan modernism and modern life in Barcelona.
