In this work, the four-handed painting between Eugenio Lucas Villaamil and Francisco Mas y Carrasco reaches a remarkable harmony, uniting landscape sensibility and narrative sense in a composition of great balance. The amplitude of the sky, the golden light of the sunset and the delicacy of the figures build a genre scene with a serene and evocative tone.
The good synergy between both artists is perceived in the natural integration of landscape and figure: the pink clouds, the vegetation and the open space create an enveloping atmosphere, while the characters introduce an everyday and friendly dimension. The result is a painting of fin-de-siècle taste, where collaboration does not fragment the work, but rather reinforces its descriptive richness and visual appeal.
Eugenio Lucas Villaamil, son of the painter Eugenio Lucas Velázquez, was trained in his father's workshop and at the Special School of Painting in Madrid. He participated in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts and was a Knight of the Order of Carlos III. He had the protection of the collector José Lázaro Galdiano. His work is represented in collections such as the Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga and the Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao.
Mas y Carrasco began his public recognition in 1881 when he obtained an honorable mention in the exhibition of the Ateneo Casino of Valencia with his work Un país (A Country). Throughout his career, his landscapes were common in the commercial establishments of Valencia. In addition to being a landscape painter, he cultivated portraiture, with his Portrait of Salvador Albacete y Albert, which currently belongs to the Collection of the Bank of Spain, standing out.
