BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

CHARLES JONES (England, 1836 - 1902).
"Flock of sheep", 1873.
Oil on panel.
Signed with initials in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 40 x 56 cm; 70 x 85 cm (frame).
Dated 1873, this painting belongs to the period of maturity of Charles Jones, when he already enjoyed recognition in institutions such as the Royal Academy in London. Works such as this one cemented his reputation as one of the great British specialists in animal scenes and natural landscapes during the Victorian era. The work features a scattered flock of sheep in a mountainous landscape crossed by a river, probably inspired by the Scottish Highlands, one of the painter's favorite settings. Jones combines a detailed anatomical observation of the animals with a deep interest in atmosphere and nature, creating a serene and monumental scene where landscape and livestock are integrated in perfect harmony.
The meticulous treatment of the wool, the textures of the terrain and the light effects of the sky reveal the artist's characteristic technical precision. The composition also conveys a sense of calm and isolation typical of the 19th century British rural landscape.

Charles Jones was a prominent British painter of Welsh origin, known especially for his rural landscapes populated by animals, particularly sheep, cattle and deer, for which he became popularly known as "Sheep Jones". Born near Cardiff and later settled in London, he developed a solid artistic career within the Victorian landscape painting of the 19th century.
His work is characterized by a meticulous and detailed style, where animals acquire a great prominence within broad natural landscapes inspired by both the English countryside and the Scottish Highlands. Jones knew how to combine anatomical precision and atmospheric sensitivity, creating serene and evocative scenes that were highly appreciated by the collectors of the time. He exhibited regularly at prestigious British institutions such as the Royal Academy between 1860 and 1891, as well as at the British Institution and the Suffolk Street Gallery. He was also a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy, consolidating his recognition within the British art scene. Around 1890 he received a gold medal at the Crystal Palace, one of the great exhibition centers of Victorian England. Among his best known compositions are works such as The Lord of the Downs and various livestock scenes set in Scotland, many of them signed with a monogram.
