The present work, frequently attributed to Robert W. Wright, is inscribed within the tradition of the English genre painting of the end of the XIX century, characterized by the representation of domestic scenes loaded with narrative sensibility and moral value. Born in London in 1850, Wright developed his artistic activity mainly between 1870 and 1906, specializing in domestic interiors, peasant scenes and prints of everyday Victorian life. His style maintains obvious links with the tradition of the great British and Scottish genre painters of the nineteenth century, especially David Wilkie and Thomas Webster, masters in the narrative representation of popular scenes.
The artist's recognition was reflected in his frequent exhibitions at prestigious institutions such as the Royal Academy and the Suffolk Street Gallery, important centers of British art at the time. Among his best known works are Making Patchwork, Baby's Birthday, Christmas Carol, Tuning Up and A Game of Draughts, titles that show his continuing interest in small human stories and scenes of everyday life.
