José Benlliure Ortiz, popularly known as "Pepino Benlliure", and son of the recognized artist José Benlliure Gil, begins his artistic studies in Rome, where he would cultivate the natural drawing and the oil paintings of typical landscapes of Assisi. He would establish his residence in the Italian capital for a long period of time, although he would make many trips to Spain, Italy and Morocco in order to continue his training. In addition, he continued his career in the workshop of Joaquín Sorolla, with whom he would make several trips, which would help him to perceive the technique of his master. From 1901 he attended the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts, where he won the third medal in 1910, second medal in 1915 and in 1916 he won the silver medal at the International Exhibition of Panama with the work entitled "La vieja del candil".
