The work represents a costumbrista scene set in a patio or market of Mediterranean character, articulated by means of an arcaded architecture of semicircular arches that organizes the composition and serves as frame to the daily activity of the characters. In the scene there are vendors, women, children and figures mounted on pack animals, distributed in a dynamic and spontaneous way, generating a sense of movement and popular life.
The composition stands out for the prominence of light, a fundamental element in the atmospheric construction of the painting. The chromatic palette, dominated by ochers, earths, warm whites and soft bluish tones, contributes to create a luminous and warm vision of the Mediterranean space. The brushstroke appears loose and vibrant, especially in the figures and in the lighting effects, bringing freshness and a certain influence of technical resources close to impressionism.
The work is part of the Spanish costumbrismo developed between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, an artistic trend interested in representing traditional scenes and everyday aspects of popular life. In the context of Mediterranean and Valencian painting, this type of compositions evolved towards more luminous and atmospheric formulations, combining the realist tradition with a growing attention to the capture of natural light and environmental effects.
These scenes enjoyed great acceptance among the bourgeoisie of the time, interested in pleasant and picturesque images of traditional life. At the same time, this type of painting acquired an important documentary and ethnographic value, reflecting the clothing, urban spaces and forms of sociability characteristic of the Mediterranean at the end of the 19th century. The work thus shows a transition between academic realism and a freer and more modern painting, focused on atmosphere, light and the representation of everyday life.
José Benlliure began his artistic studies with Francisco Domingo in Valencia, and then continued his training in Madrid, where he settled in 1869. From an early age he enjoyed the patronage of the King of Savoy and in 1879 he moved to Rome, where he was discovered by the important art dealer Martin Colnaghi, who financed his studies in the city. In 1897 he made several trips to Tangier, Algeria and Morocco where he approached through a realistic, luminous and loose painting to the daily world of the places visited. From 1900 onwards his work depicts popular themes. He took part in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts, obtaining third medals in the editions of 1876 and 1878 and first in the one of 1887. He belonged to the Academies of San Fernando (Madrid), San Lucas (Rome), San Carlos (Valencia), Brera (Milan) and Munich. Between 1904 and 1912 he directed the Spanish Academy in Rome. The most important part of his production is preserved in Valencia, in his House Museum and in the Museum of Fine Arts San Pío V. He is also represented in the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Palace of Charles V in Granada, among others.
