DESCRIPTION

JOSE JIMENEZ ARANDA (Seville, 1837 - 1903).
"The Christmas Eve turkey", 1870.
Oil on canvas.
Signed.
Presents faults in the frame.
Measurements: 50 × 62 cm.; 76 × 86 cm. with frame.

Costumbrista scene of careful narration, set in a country home during the preparations for Christmas Eve. The turkey, placed in the center, articulates the small family ceremony and alludes directly to the festive Christmas tradition: the young woman with the child in her arms occupies the emotional core of the scene; the old woman, next to the hearth, introduces a note of continuity and domestic memory; the girl leans curiously towards the animal, while the male figure observes attentively from the right.

The composition stands out for its theatrical sense and for the precision with which the artist distributes figures, objects and spotlights. The palette of earths, ochers and blacks is enlivened with details such as birds, vegetables, utensils, furniture and crockery, elements that reinforce the idea of humble abundance and family celebration. The lateral light, coming from the window, softly models the characters and directs the attention towards the central group.

The work reveals Jiménez Aranda's mastery of the costumbrista genre, his interest in popular interiors and his ability to transform an everyday episode into an image of great narrative charm, human warmth and remarkable pictorial quality.

José Jiménez Aranda was one of the leading names in 19th century Sevillian painting. He trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Santa Isabel of Hungary in Seville. During his stay in Rome, he came into contact with Mariano Fortuny, whose influence would mark part of his production. Between 1881 and 1890 he lived in Paris, a period in which he achieved notable success with scenes set in the 18th century. On his return to Spain he focused on genre subjects, without abandoning other genres such as landscape or religious painting. From 1892 he worked as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Seville, where he trained artists such as Eugenio Hermoso and Manuel González Santos.

His career was widely recognized during his lifetime, obtaining honorary mentions at the National Fine Arts Exhibitions of 1864 and 1866, first medal in 1890 and medal of honor at the International Exhibition of Munich in 1883. His work is preserved in institutions such as the Museo del Prado, the Museo de Bellas Artes de Sevilla and the Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga, in addition to important private collections.
