DESCRIPTION

JOSÉ NAVARRO LLORENS (Valencia, 1867–1923).
“Cala de la Granadella”.
Oil on canvas.
Unsigned.
Measurements: 33 x 24 cm.
José Navarro Llorens took up painting at a very young age and studied at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in his hometown. After his student years, we lose track of him, and we do not find him again until 1895 when, according to Pantorba, he entered the National Fine Arts Exhibition for the first and only time, receiving an honorable mention. That same year marked the rise of Joaquín Sorolla, who unanimously won first prize at that competition. Although they were lifelong friends, it is possible that Navarro, given his bohemian and humble nature, did not aspire, like Sorolla, to a meteoric career marked by official accolades and courtly prestige. It seems he never intended to project his work beyond a limited local sphere, as can be inferred from the fact that, in his early years, he devoted himself to painting genre scenes and gallant subjects for fans. Nevertheless, his early works show a certain influence from the style of Mariano Fortuny, whom Navarro admired, and from whose example he may have drawn inspiration to, in a later phase, travel to Morocco. This trip must have taken place shortly after he finished his studies, and during it he devoted himself to depicting local, North African, and Orientalist themes. In the early 20th century, he was commissioned to decorate a palace in Buenos Aires, although Navarro never actually made it to Argentina. He set sail for that destination, but during a stopover in Rio de Janeiro, the painter decided to stay there indefinitely. In the Brazilian city, he continued working and held an exhibition that was highly acclaimed. However, his longing for his homeland—the central theme of his artistic language—led him to return to Valencia, settling permanently in Godella. There he lived the rest of his life in a simple and humble manner, teaching painting at the town’s academy and painting tirelessly. His style draws on various influences, such as Fortuny, Domingo Marqués, and Levantine Luminism, but it always remained deeply personal, tied to Navarro’s own way of understanding the world. His painting evokes Mediterranean clarity through beautiful transparencies, a corporeal luminosity, and nervous, vibrant brushstrokes. His is an energetic, robust, and vital realism that transforms light into a plastic—and even tactile—quality, rather than merely a chromatic one. José Navarro is represented in the Fine Arts Museums of Valencia and Asturias, the Carmen Thyssen Museum in Málaga, and the Gerstenmaier Collection, among other public and private collections.
