At the end of the 19th century, there was a high international demand for Italian genre scenes. Rome and Naples were key destinations for Spanish artists on study grants, and many of them, including Joaquín Agrasot, found in the Italian peasantry a subject matter highly prized by collectors and art dealers. Agrasot spent long periods in Italy and developed a genre of painting inspired by peasants, washerwomen, shepherdesses, fishermen, and young women dressed in traditional costumes.
These figures should not be understood as individual portraits, but rather as “folk types.” Their appeal lay in offering a picturesque and charming image of Mediterranean rural life. The European public saw in these characters a blend of folk authenticity, familiar exoticism, and idealized beauty. For this reason, there is an abundance of depictions of Neapolitan girls in traditional dress, often set against landscape backgrounds or integrated into simple scenes of daily life.
