BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

MARÍA LUISA DE LA RIVA (Zaragoza, 1865–Madrid, 1926).
“Vase.”
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower left corner.
Measurements: 130 x 97 cm.
Renowned for her extraordinary technical skill and the delicacy with which she approached botanical representation, María Luisa de la Riva forged a unique career path in a context where the presence of women in professional art circles was still exceptional. In this composition, De la Riva presents an exuberant floral arrangement in an elegant, ornamental vase, set against a dark background that accentuates the work’s light and color. The bouquet, composed of a varied selection of wild and ornamental flowers in shades of white, pink, red, and yellow, unfolds with a spontaneous and natural appearance, though it is carefully structured from a compositional standpoint. The artist demonstrates a deep understanding of plant forms, precisely rendering petals, leaves, and stems through meticulous brushwork and careful observation of variations in light and texture.
Trained by the sculptor Mariano Bellver and the painter Antonio Pérez Rubio, María Luisa de la Riva developed a career marked by exhibition success. She participated in numerous national and international exhibitions, receiving an honorable mention at the National Fine Arts Exhibitions of 1887 and 1895, third-place medals in 1897 and 1901 for *Grapes of Spain* and *Summer Fruits*, and a second medal in 1920 for Grapes and Pomegranates. She was also honored at the World’s Fairs in Paris (1889) and Barcelona (1898). Her prestige extended beyond Spain: she was a member of the Society of Artists in Berlin and Vienna, an honorary member of the Economic Society of Friends of the Country in Santiago de Compostela, and received the Palm of the French Academy and the Order of Nicham Iftikhar from Tunisia.
