BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Spanish School; 19th century.
A follower of José Jiménez Aranda (1837–1903).
“Justice Prevails.”
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 64 x 90 cm; 84 x 111 cm (frame).

A detachment of the old justice system—or a squad of bailiffs—arrives to conduct a search or arrest at a stately home. On the left, the chief bailiff knocks firmly on the large, studded gate, while the constables and men armed with blunderbusses and swords secure the street, standing at the ready. The painting demonstrates an extraordinary attention to period costumes from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, combining ceremonial capes, tricorn hats, doublets, and stockings with period footwear, characteristic of the anecdotal “casacón” genre.
It is set in a narrow, winding Andalusian or Castilian alleyway lined with whitewashed facades, high devotional niches, and wrought-iron balconies. At the far right, the imposing presence of the crossbeam of a crucifix (a village cross) stands out, adding an ethical and iconographic counterpoint to the idea of “human justice.”
In the background, in the street’s perspective, a diverse group of passersby and neighbors watches the deployment of law enforcement with curiosity and murmurs.
