The scene features a close-up composition focused on the faces and busts of the figures. This tight, intimate arrangement accentuates the sense of oppression, tension, and confinement experienced by Christ as he is surrounded by his captors in the Garden of Gethsemane. On the right, the figure of Jesus stands out for his expression of serene resignation and dignity. His luminous face is marked by sharp contrasts with the markedly angular, dark, and expressionistic features of the soldiers and henchmen who have him in custody.
Drawing clearly on the tradition of Spanish Baroque tenebrism (influenced by masters such as Ribera and Goya), the focused lighting intensifies the pictorial drama. The coppery tones, deep browns, and touches of red in the clothing stand out against a background of absolute darkness. The execution features loose, rich brushstrokes and great chromatic freedom, characteristic of the transition from late 19th-century academic painting to the naturalism and expressionism of the early 20th century.
