The painting brings together two essential aspects of Roig i Soler’s work: the coastal landscape and the depiction of maritime activity. The beached boats occupy the center of a composition that opens toward the coastal town, while the fishermen and fishing gear scattered across the sand convey the daily rhythm of a beach still tied to work.

The direct brushwork and light color palette place the work within the context of Catalan Luminism. Roig constructs the space using short brushstrokes and shades of blue, ochre, and white, attuned to the variations of Mediterranean light. The large sail stretched diagonally organizes the scene and draws the eye toward the horizon, while the vastness of the sky and the sand accentuates the atmospheric feeling. The coasts of Sitges, Vilanova i la Geltrú, Blanes, Tossa, and Mallorca were recurring motifs throughout his career.

A student of Modest Urgell, Joan Roig i Soler settled in Sitges in 1880 and, together with Arcadi Mas i Fondevila, was one of the principal founders of the Sitges Luminist School, a significant precursor to the Catalan Modernist movement. His painting evolved toward a clearer and more vibrant depiction of the landscape, particularly the coastline and its towns. His work is represented in the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, the Museu Marítim de Barcelona, and the Museu de l’Empordà.
