The large format and the complex arrangement of six figures give this scene a prominent place within Romà Ribera’s historicist genre painting. A young girl performs a dance step in the center of a seventeenth-century-style interior, watched by several women whose reactions—attention, approval, and curiosity—transform this domestic scene into a vivid narrative.

The composition is organized around the young girl’s pink dress, the scene’s primary focal point of light and color. Her figure is flanked by the deep tones of the dark costumes and by the ivory dress of the woman leaning to the right, creating a carefully calculated balance. Ribera demonstrates a special sensitivity to the qualities of the fabrics: the lace, the puffed sleeves, the embroidery, and the satiny sheen are rendered with precision, without losing the atmospheric softness of the whole.

Observation of the characters’ gestures is essential. Each character reacts differently to the young dancer, ranging from the protective stance of the woman on the left to the knowing nod of the figure dressed in white. This expressive variety, combined with his mastery of drawing and the warm, subdued lighting, allows the painter to transform an anecdotal scene into a compelling depiction of social and emotional relationships.

Trained at the Llotja and at Pere Borrell’s academy, Ribera furthered his studies in Rome before settling in Paris, where he worked with the art dealer Goupil and achieved international recognition following his participation in the 1878 World’s Fair. Although he was particularly renowned for his scenes of contemporary high society, he also created historical compositions, such as this one, in which he demonstrated his narrative skill and technical refinement.

His work is represented in the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, the Museu de Montserrat, the Afundación Collection, and the Museo de Bellas Artes de Badajoz.
