DESCRIPTION

JOSÉ MONGRELL TORRENT (Valencia, 1870 – Barcelona, 1937).
“Valenciana.”
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the upper left corner.
Measurements: 88 x 75 cm; 112 x 98 cm (frame).

José Mongrell studied at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in Valencia, where he was a student of Ignacio Pinazo and Joaquín Sorolla. He gradually gained artistic renown through his participation in numerous competitions and exhibitions in Madrid and Barcelona. In 1897, he created, with great success, the bullfighting poster for the San Jaime Fair in Valencia; in fact, his poster for the 1912 July Fair in Valencia was reprinted in 1971 to mark the centennial of those festivities. He was appointed professor at the San Jorge School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he lived for the rest of his life. Notable works from this period include the piece he created for the Palace of the Generalitat of Catalonia, commissioned by the Barcelona Provincial Council, as well as his portrait of King Alfonso XIII. He also created Modernist-style mosaics, such as those on the grand arch of the Colón Market and on the façade of the Estación del Norte, both in Barcelona. Mongrell devoted himself to genre painting, portraiture, and landscape, and was a master at capturing the fleeting moment, infusing his scenes with vitality and dynamism through brilliant, naturalistic colors and light. Traditionally categorized as a disciple of Sorolla, Mongrell nevertheless learned from his master only what served to expand his own art. The painter’s work straddled the line between Regionalism and Modernism, yet his work also reveals a certain French-influenced symbolism. In fact, Mongrell was known for emphasizing content, endowing the image with a meaning that goes beyond mere appearance. At a time when grand, idealized, and dramatic historical compositions were in vogue, this painter developed a style concerned with capturing the past and the present from an everyday, gentle, and picturesque perspective—one generally far removed from the grandiloquence and theatricality of academic history painting. Despite his technical mastery, Mongrell did not, like others, fall into a refined mannerism in the service of trivial subject matter; rather, he developed a wholly personal artistic language, characterized by its dynamism and expressive freedom. Currently, José Mongrell’s works are represented at the San Pío V Museum of Fine Arts and the González Martí National Museum of Ceramics and Sumptuary Arts in Valencia, as well as the Fine Arts Museums of Asturias, Badajoz, and Pontevedra; the National Art Museum of Catalonia; the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam; the Museum of Havana; and the Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, among others.
