The canvas now up for auction is a striking example of the Orientalist work of Émile Boivin, a French painter whose career was closely linked to North Africa and who produced numerous works inspired by Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt. In this work, the artist sets the scene against the monumental pyramids of Khufu and Khafre, whose geometric forms dominate a vast landscape bathed in warm, diffused light. In the foreground, small figures dressed in bright colors—one of them riding a camel—introduce a narrative element and provide a sense of scale to the vast scene. Particularly characteristic of Boivin is the combination of landscape observation, light, and motifs from daily life—elements through which he transforms the monumental view into a lively and atmospheric scene. Egyptian themes are also of particular interest within his body of work, as other compositions by the artist dedicated to the pyramids and Cairo are known, fully integrating him into late-19th-century French Orientalism and its fascination with the landscapes and cultures of the southern Mediterranean.
