RAMÓN MARTÍ ALSINA (Barcelona, 1826–1894).
“Coastal Scene.”
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 71 x 117 cm; 85 x 131 cm (frame).
In this painting, Martí Alsina presents one of his distinctive seascapes depicting local life, yet imbued with a masterful sense of drama that is reflected both in the human activity on the foreshore and in the turbulent sky—a scene with an almost Baroque quality, magnificently rendered across multiple planes of depth, with thick, sun-dappled clouds—lighter at the base and rising like threatening waves, almost black in the upper right corner, and opening up to a twilight sky in the central area. In an asymmetrical and perfectly calculated composition—which heightens the dramatic tension—we see a genre scene centered on the fishing boats that, dwarfed by the magnificence of nature, struggle to return to shore without sinking, amid the anxiety of their companions and families, who wait on the beach. The drama of the scene is further skillfully heightened by the painter through his use of scale, which makes the figures seem tiny against the grandeur of the natural setting—even more sublime, if that is possible, when it unleashes its fury.
Considered one of the key figures of 19th-century Spanish Realism, Ramon Martí Alsina played a decisive role in the renewal of Catalan painting by linking artistic practice to the direct observation of reality and the study of nature. His work broke with academic conventions and brought Spanish painting closer to the European realist movements of his time. His pictorial language is distinguished by his attention to light, compositional solidity, and the authenticity of the settings. He focused particularly on landscapes, seascapes, and cityscapes—especially those of Barcelona—as well as portraits, genre scenes, nudes, and history painting. His evolution toward a freer and more spontaneous style demonstrates his ability to renew the expressive resources of painting. As a teacher, he advocated direct observation over academic models and influenced artists such as Joaquim Vayreda, Modest Urgell, and Josep Lluís Pellicer, helping to lay the foundations of the modern Catalan school. His recognition at the National Fine Arts Exhibitions in Madrid, where he won medals in 1858 and 1860, cemented his national reputation.
His work is featured in prominent public collections, such as the Prado Museum, the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, and the National Art Museum of Catalonia.
