In this work, we can see sailboats struggling to navigate the waters off a very rough coastline.
Based on its formal characteristics, this piece can be classified within the 19th-century Romantic landscape tradition, which made the depiction of nature’s great power one of its defining features. The aim was to return to the primal forces of nature, which had been sidelined by scientism and the Industrial Revolution.
