The intensity of the gaze and the focused composition demonstrate Ramon Martí Alsina’s mastery in the genre of portraiture as well—a facet less widely known than his landscape work but equally tied to his realist ideology. The subject is depicted in a bust portrait, slightly turned and gazing directly at the viewer, against a neutral, dark background that focuses all attention on the face.

The loose, visible brushstrokes build up the features using a wide range of ochres, earth tones, and warm hues, reserving greater luminosity for the forehead, face, and neck. The hair and mustache blend into the shadows through a freer style, while the clothing is barely suggested with broad strokes. This economy of means accentuates the portrait’s immediacy and shifts the focus from meticulous description to the subject’s physical and psychological presence.

Ramon Martí Alsina was a key figure in Spanish Realism and one of the great innovators of 19th-century Catalan painting. Trained at the Escola de la Llotja, where he later served as an instructor and professor, he championed direct observation of life from nature and applied those principles to landscape, figure, and portrait painting alike. His trips to Paris allowed him to become acquainted with contemporary French painting, particularly the Realism of Gustave Courbet. He won a third medal at the 1858 National Exhibition of Fine Arts and a second in 1860 for *Landscape of Catalonia*. His work is held in institutions such as the Museo Nacional del Prado and the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya.
