RICARD MARTÍ AGUILÓ (Barcelona, 1868–1936).
“Young Man with a Pitcher.”
Oil on glass.
Frame with Modernist tiles.
Measurements: 147 x 45.5 cm; 181 x 82 cm (frame).
In this work, Ricardo Martí Aguiló explores one of the themes most closely associated with fin-de-siècle sensibilities: the female figure set within an exuberant floral universe. The young woman, depicted full-length with her gaze gently lowered, holds a classically inspired pitcher decorated with a geometric fretwork pattern—a detail that subtly evokes antiquity. Her delicate dress in light tones and the large chrysanthemums adorning both her hair and the surroundings allow the painter to deploy a luminous palette of whites, pinks, yellows, and greens, applied with a nimble brushstroke that is particularly virtuosic in rendering flowers, fabrics, and skin tones. The stylization of the figure, the ornamental sensibility, and the close association between woman and nature place the work squarely within the Modernist and Symbolist sensibilities of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Of particular interest is also the technique of oil on glass, an unusual medium that enhances the luminosity and unique material quality of the piece. Its pronounced vertical format, combined with the frame decorated with Modernist tiles, makes the work as a whole distinctly decorative in nature.
A Catalan painter, son and disciple of Ramon Martí i Alsina, Ricard Martí i Aguiló was trained directly within the circle of one of the key figures in the renewal of 19th-century Catalan painting. From his father, he inherited a realistic and naturalistic approach to painting, based on direct observation of the model and the landscape, as well as a special interest in capturing atmospheric and lighting effects. Martí i Aguiló produced a relatively varied body of work, focusing particularly on landscapes, seascapes, still lifes, and flower paintings, in addition to portraits. He was an active participant in Barcelona’s art scene in the late 19th century: at the 1891 General Exhibition of Fine Arts in Barcelona, he presented *Spring* and two flower paintings, thereby establishing his presence in the city’s official art competitions. Ricard Martí i Aguiló’s career should therefore be understood not only in the shadow of his father’s powerful artistic personality, but also as a significant link in the continuity of Catalan realism between the 19th and 20th centuries. His painting kept alive the naturalist tradition championed by Martí Alsina and passed it on to a new generation of artists through his own work and his teaching.
