DESCRIPTION
19th–20th-century Italian school.
“Venetian View.”
Oil on tinplate.
Measurements: 20 x 34 cm; 27 x 40.5 cm (frame).
Conceived as a Venetian veduta, this work captures the allure that Venice exerted on Italian and European painters between the 19th and 20th centuries. The composition is dominated by the monumental architecture of the Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, recognizable by its distinctive dome and its prime location facing the lagoon. The vast expanse of the sky and the prominence of the lagoon reinforce the depth of the composition, which draws on the great tradition of the Venetian veduta, here revitalized through a more luminous and picturesque sensibility characteristic of the turn of the century.
