The combination of coastal landscape, boats, and small figures places this work within the marine art tradition developed around Claude-Joseph Vernet, one of the great innovators of 18th-century French landscape painting. The scene is organized through a succession of planes: the figures of fishermen and the rocks in the foreground lead the eye toward the boats and the horizon, while the expansive sky accounts for much of the composition’s atmospheric appeal.
The alternation between illuminated areas and large masses of clouds, together with the picturesque character of the figures and the rocky coastline, reflects the idealized Mediterranean landscape that Vernet developed during his long stay in Italy. The wash technique allows for a smooth gradation of the sky and the distance, while the details of the boats, vegetation, and figures are rendered with more defined brushstrokes, accentuating the depth of the scene.
Claude-Joseph Vernet was initially trained in Avignon and resided in Rome from 1734 to 1752, where he absorbed the tradition of classical landscape painting by Claude Lorrain and Gaspard Dughet, as well as the dramatic intensity of Salvator Rosa. Upon his return to France, he joined the Académie Royale and, in 1753, received the important royal commission for the *Ports de France* series, which cemented his reputation as one of the leading European landscape and marine painters of the 18th century. His work is widely represented in the Musée du Louvre and the National Gallery in London.
