A tall lighthouse stands in the center of the composition. Surrounding it, the waves of a raging sea swirl, breaking into white foam against the rocky promontory. Amid the waves, a fragile fishing boat can be seen, seemingly struggling against the force of the water as it makes its way safely toward the shore. The painter emphasizes the stormy aspect of the scene with a sky where gray clouds alternate with orange streaks that seem to suggest sunrise or sunset. The brushwork is loose and free, with spontaneous strokes rich in texture to suggest, for example, the movement of the water.
