A painter born in Rio de Janeiro, Humberto da Costa studied artistic and advertising drawing at the Instituto Nacional de Ensino, and later at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro with Aloisio Carvão. He began his career working for the "Jornal À Noite", where he was also an assistant draftsman. During the first stage of his production, between 1956 and 1962, he focused especially on watercolors and charcoal drawing, to gradually cultivate more and more easel painting. In the sixties he began to make himself known through contests, and in 1969 he held his first individual exhibition at the Loggia Gallery in Rio de Janeiro. From then on he would live exclusively from his painting and would show his work in various individual and collective exhibitions, as well as in official salons in Brazil and abroad. Between 1991 and 1994 he taught at the Copacabana Art Center and also in his own studio in Rio. He currently lives and works in Salvador de Bahia.
