JOSÉ MARCED FURIÓ (Villajoyosa, Alicante, 1889 - Valencia, 1967).

Artist trained in the School of Fine Arts of San Carlos, where he was a disciple of Garnelo, Salvá, Palau and Ferrer. From the outset he worked within the moulds of realism, preferably cultivating the genre of portraiture, the composition of figures, still lifes, interior flowers and genre scenes, within a realism that draws on that of Dutch realism. His paintings with their confident, colourful brushstrokes depicted portraits, typical prints, figures, landscapes and, above all, still lifes and flowers, which were the genres most in demand by his clients.
His work and various commissions led him to travel assiduously around Barcelona, Valencia and Alicante, until he gradually established himself in Valencia and became one of the most renowned artists of his time. This was largely helped by his participation in the Fallas. He returned frequently to Alicante, where he held several exhibitions. The following year he built the bonfires in Plaza Alfonso XII (now the Town Hall) and Plaza Isabel II (now Gabriel Miró) on his own. He received several prizes for these monuments. He spent the rest of his life in Valencia, where he died at the age of 78. He held exhibitions all over the country.
