BID HISTORY
DESCRIPTION
VICTOR KALLINIK GOUSSEF (Russia, 1893-1980).
"Still Life with Book, Sculpture and Roses, 1958.
Oil on panel.
Signed and dated in the upper right-hand corner.
Size: 48 x 59 cm; 68.5 x 79.5 cm (frame).
Goussef first studied art at the Rostov School of Fine Arts, later extending his studies at the Higher School of Fine Arts in Moscow. He moved to Paris where he studied at various art schools. Attracted by the masters of Spanish painting, he later settled in Madrid and became a pupil at the San Fernando Royal Academy, where he was a disciple of Moreno Carbonero. He travelled around Spain until he settled in Barcelona, where he held several solo exhibitions. He took part in the official exhibitions of 1919, 1921 and 1922 and in 1936 he took part in the I Salón de los Independientes and in the National Exhibitions of 1942 and 1944.
His art absorbed the Cezannian and impressionist teachings and transcribed them into his personal work. His brushstrokes are loose and unrestrained, capable of conveying the dynamism and liveliness of this dance scene, and his interest in capturing the light is intense.
