DESCRIPTION
CHRISTIAN FLOQUET (Geneva, Switzerland, 1961).
Untitled, 1988.
Oil on canvas.
Measurements: 220 x 210 cm.
Christian Floquet lives and works in Geneva. His language is fully inscribed in the geometric abstraction following in the wake of painters like Theo Van Doesburg (1883-1931), belonging to the Swiss school and one of the founders of the magazine De Stijl. He develops a flat geometry with strong ranges of color that reveals a geometric abstraction planned on rational principles, aspiring to objectivity and universality. The starting point and core of his painting is his intense exploration of the power of asymmetry. In the late 1980s Floquet began to incorporate only two colors and often only two shapes. The "bi-dimensionnalité" (flatness) in which Floquet is fundamentally interested is generated by an application of completely opaque paint without spatial depth. Floquet's language is proof that asymmetry has not yet been exhausted as an artistic theme.
