YAMANDU CANOSA (Montevideo, Uruguay, 1954).
"Root". 2002.
Oil on canvas.
Signed, titled and dated on the back.
Measurements: 45 x 61 cm.
Yamandú Canosa has dedicated himself to multiple artistic techniques, conceiving the investigation of procedures and materials as an integral part of his creation. The artist seeks, through his work, balance, interested in cultural identity, memory and affective experience, the fragility of interpersonal relationships, uprooting and migration. The displaced human being is one of his focuses of interest. He conveys this theme through images that flee from the figurative to build singular and unique narratives, achieving a permanent tension between sign and metalanguage, between reference and metaphor. The artist achieved a great projection in the Ibero-American art scene thanks to the Pedro Figari Award, which he received in 2007 in recognition of his career. In mid-2011, the exhibition El árbol de los frutos diferentes (The Tree of Different Fruits) at the Fundación Suñol in Barcelona, constituted a retrospective of his production over the last twenty years. A tireless traveler, he has exhibited in Europe and the U.S.A., as well as in Brazil and Argentina.
