RAMÓN CAPMANY MONTANER (Canet de Mar, 1899 - Barcelona, 1992).
"Holm oaks", 1951.
Oil on canvas.

Capmany was a skillful painter of crowds, being the days of markets, the Sunday exits, the urban strolls animated by elegant ladies, but also by popular groups, his most successful subjects. Here we see a clear exponent of this ability for the vivid sketching to the natural. Painter, engraver and bibliophile, he was a disciple of Francesc Labarta at the Escuela de la Lonja in Barcelona. As a painter he was mainly dedicated to landscapes (especially of old Barcelona and Montseny), with a naturalistic style, faithful to nature, detailed and with fine strokes. He had important individual and collective exhibitions in Barcelona, Paris, Madrid, Munich and London, among other European cities. Among his awards, the Travelling Exhibition in New York (1926), an exhibition that brought him international fame, and the gold medal in the competition "Barcelona seen by its artists" (1931) stand out. He exhibited regularly at the Sala Parés, and was a member of the group Los Evolucionistas until 1923. He also collaborated in many of the bibliophile editions of the publishing house Montaner y Simón, a prominent company to which the artist was linked by family ties, always using etching, generally in color. He is represented in the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona.
