Juan Soler began his training with Álvarez de Sotomayor, of whom he was an advanced disciple. Subsequently, he furthered his studies at the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid and at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in the same city. He specialized in the costumbrista theme, especially in port scenes of the note of Spain, starring fishermen, shellfish gatherers, etc., usually the humble types common in certain masters of the time. His style could also be related at first sight to that of certain outstanding painters, both for his lighting and for his preferred subject matter and technique. Throughout his career he took part in group exhibitions all over the world, and also held individual exhibitions in Spain, Venezuela, Mexico, Portugal and the United States. He also participated in artistic contests and competitions, being awarded in 1978 with the Gold Medal in the contest "Pinturas Castellanas en Miniatura", held in Valladolid. He is currently represented in public and private collections, including those of Richard Nixon, Dean Martin and Giscard d'Estaign, as well as the Saudi Embassy in Madrid and the Maria da Fontinha Museum, to cite just a few examples.
