Manuel Sánchez Méndez studied at the then Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de Madrid, where he coincided with several artists who would later form part of the group "El Paso". During 1956, 1957 and 1958 he actively participated in exhibitions and artistic projects with the Koiné Group, in cities such as Salamanca, Madrid and Barcelona. He received a scholarship from the Juan March Foundation.
He developed his professional career combining artistic practice with teaching, initially in the field of secondary education. In the 1970s he became a professor at the School of Fine Arts in Madrid. From this position, and in collaboration with other teachers, he promoted the integration of the School into the university system, in the context of the educational reform promoted by the General Education Law of 1970.
He occupied one of the first chairs of Pedagogy of Drawing in Spain, from which he carried out an outstanding academic work in the framework of the consolidation of the Faculties of Fine Arts. In 1981, he founded the first museum of children's art in the country: the Pedagogical Museum of Art.
