Puig Barella began his education in the School of Decoration of Barcelona, under the guidelines of the famous artist Joaquín Torres García. In this institution he coincided with the painter Josep Obiols i Palau, and the poet Josep Viçenc Foix, who exerted a great artistic influence on Barella's work. His painting is characterized by a great interest in the Italian masters, the work of Joaquín Torres García and the painting of Modigliani, with whom he established a relationship in Paris.
