Karin Kneffel attracted the attention of critics and galleries for her peculiar works whose realism radiates a paradoxical surreal sensation. In this "Portrait" of a hen, her ability to symbolically break the two-dimensionality of the painting is evident. In his paintings of animals (but also in the series of fruits, flowers, burning flames, tapestries, fabrics, and everyday objects), the pictorial surface radiates a surprising materiality, which captures the viewer. Technical virtuosity and conceptual enigma combine in her work.

Karin Kneffel lives and works in Düsseldorf and Munich, Germany. Her meticulously detailed compositions often use reflections and superimposed perspectives to transform everyday scenes into dreamlike atmospheres. A student of Gerhard Richter, Kneffel has gained international recognition for her exploration of perception and illusion. After completing her studies at the Düsseldorf Academy of the Arts in 1987, she worked as a lecturer and visiting professor at various universities in Germany and Iceland. Her work has been exhibited throughout much of Europe and on both coasts of the United States.
