"The discovery of the Antilles" describes a tropical and warm scenery. The large format and the support in which this work was created stand out: a canvas of rough and exotic textures, thick, "in serge", to which the vibrant colors and the great yellowish sunset sky have been added. The finish of the pictorial work is on canvas with a very fine stucco relief, which makes the figures and details adopt a low relief effect.

Salvador Carlos Palet was a painter, decorator, engraver and writer. Trained at the School of Fine Arts in Marseille at the end of his secondary studies, he arrived in Paris in 1930. There he made caricatures for various magazines, frequented Cocteau and his friends, and worked as a poster artist, theater decorator and designer of decorative panels. After a period in Spain, he entered military service in Tunisia. On his return to Paris he met his friends from the artistic circle and continued his activities as a decorator both in Paris and on the coast. After a purely landscape period, he began to develop large trompe l'oeil paintings. He was a restless artist who traveled all over the world: Australia, New Guinea, New Caledonia (source of inspiration for this great colonialist work). He held exhibitions in Australia with great success. After fifteen years he returned to France and settled in the Midi. His painting is a very free interpretation of reality, always with a naive touch.
