JEAN -ALBERT GRAND CARTERET (1903-1954)
"Female nude", 1928.
Pastel on paper.
Signed and dated in the upper left corner.
Measurements: 45 x 60 cm; 56 x 72 cm (frame).
Pastel on paper in which the author represents a naked woman lying on a bed, with her back to the viewer. The composition, intimate and silent, is characterized by an atmosphere of melancholic recollection, in which the female body becomes the central axis of a carefully constructed scene.
The figure, located in the center of the image, but diagonally, appears lying in a relaxed position, with her legs slightly bent. The treatment of the pastel reveals the technical skill of the artist, who models the skin with delicacy, using a range of warm tones that contrast with the cold folds of the sheet and the gloom that envelops an area of the room.
The use of light is subdued and modulated, which contributes to accentuate the sense of isolation and contemplation. There are no explicit narrative elements, but rather a focus on gesture, body volume and the suspended atmosphere of the scene. The viewer is placed in the position of a distant observer, without access to the model's face, which reinforces the idea of anonymity and turns the body into a space of formal and emotional contemplation.
The work, representative of a modern sensibility but still rooted in academic traditions, denotes the influence of the French school of the figure and the intimist symbolism of the early twentieth century. Grand-Carteret, best known for his refined treatment of the female body, demonstrates in this piece his ability to combine plastic sensuality in an image of powerful emotional suggestion.
