FRANCISCO SAN JOSÉ (Madrid, 1919 - 1981).
"Boats on a pier", 1975.

Presents stamp on the back of the Lienzo Gallery (Madrid).
Signed and dated on the lower left side. Signed and titled on the back.
Measurements: 24 x 35 cm; 41 x 52 cm (frame).
Francisco San José was initiated in art in his first visits to the Prado Museum, where he was especially marked by the horses of Velázquez and Rubens. In 1932 he began his training at the School of Arts and Crafts, and in 1936 he became a regular at the Museum of Artistic Reproductions in Madrid and entered the School of Fine Arts. After the civil war, which was a break in his career, he meets Benjamín Palencia and forms with him the School of Vallecas. In 1953 he obtained an honorable mention in the exhibition "Paisajes de Madrid", held in Manila, and in 1956 he settled in Venezuela, where he founded the Escuela del Bosque. Around 1970 he resumed his relationship with Spain and with Benajmín Palencia, and in 1972 he returned to Madrid for good. Throughout his career San José exhibited his work individually in important galleries in Spain, Argentina and Venezuela, and participated in numerous group exhibitions. He is currently represented in the MACBA in Barcelona, the Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid, the Elsedo in Santander, the Camón Aznar in Zaragoza, the Elsedo in Santander, the Palacio de las Cadenas in Toledo, the Santos Díez Foundation, the Congress of Deputies, the Assembly of the Community of Madrid, the Chamber of Commerce of the same city, the collections of the Bank of Spain, BBVA and Central Hispano and the Lorenzana Foundation.
