GEORGES BRESSE (1920- end of the 20th century).
Untitled.
Oil on canvas.

Measurements: 77 x 61,5 cm; 78 x 62,5 cm (frame).
This painting by Georges Bresse represents an intimate and daily scene, executed with a pictorial style clearly influenced by the postimpressionist tradition and the classical figuration of the 20th century.
The work shows a woman seated on her back on a bed, partially reclining while reading a book or newspaper. Her figure occupies the center of the composition, captured in a relaxed and natural pose, with her left leg bent over her right. She wears a light blue garment that exposes much of her back and legs, which, together with the warm light that models her skin, accentuates the subtle sensuality of the moment without falling into explicit eroticism.
The domestic environment is suggested by textile elements that surround the figure: a golden quilt with marked folds, a decorated cushion and a background of gray or blue curtains that give depth to the scene. The treatment of the pictorial material is vigorous, with loose, impastoed brushstrokes that reveal the texture of oil paint and a strong presence of the artist's gesture.
Bresse handles color with ease, balancing the warm tones of the skin and textiles with the cool tones of the background and dress. The anatomy is solidly resolved, and although there is a slight stylization, a deep technical knowledge of the human body is evident.
