The work takes up the romantic tradition of Géricault's great canvas, The Raft of the Medusa, and translates it into the lightness and transparency of watercolor. The composition is organized in an ascending triangle, which concentrates the dramatic tension and guides the gaze upwards, in the midst of a convulsive sea and a storm that hovers over the scene. The naked bodies are not presented as contemporary figures, but as timeless allegories of suffering, hope and human fragility in the face of catastrophe.
