Artist of self-taught formation, Josep Novellas developed a work that can well be inscribed within the magic realism. He made his individual debut in 1968, with an exhibition held at the Municipal Museum of Mataró, where he exhibited his work again the following year. Since then he has had solo exhibitions in Spain as well as in France and Belgium, with special mention of his exhibitions at the Grand Palais in Paris (1990) and at the Smelik-Stokking galleries in The Hague (1993, 1996 and 2000) and Amsterdam (2001). Skilful and incisive caricaturist, as well as painter and sculptor, in the years of the democratic recovery he illustrated the satirical magazine "La pipa d'en Roc". One of the highlights of his career took place in 1992, when he was distinguished as the official artist of the Barcelona Olympic Games. The following year, the Museum of Mataró dedicated an anthological exhibition of wide repercussion to him.
