DESCRIPTION
PIERRE FOREST (Nice,1881-Paris,1971).
Untitled.
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 73 x 54 cm; 88 x 70 cm (frame).
Painter of landscapes, seascapes, still lifes, flowers and pastel of the skies of Paris, nephew of the engraver Forest-Fleury, he exhibited in the gallery Terrise, in the boulevard Haussman, in 1923, and then, from 1924 to 1929, in the gallery Reitlinger, in the rue La Boétie. From 1931 to 1943 he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris, of which he was a member. He exhibited in South America, Switzerland and Morocco. In 1981, the city of Nice presented a retrospective exhibition of his work.
Until 1938, when he settles permanently in Paris, Pierre lives in the studio of his friend Gabriel Hervé, Villa des Arts, in Montmartre. He travels around the capital with his sketchbook in his hand. Two major periods can be distinguished in his career: The painter of the flowers of Nice, of the landscapes of the Côte d'Azur painted with a palette knife in a Barbizon-en-Provence style, with thick brushstrokes, and a second stage of a more melancholic tone.
In 1981, the city of Nice presented a retrospective exhibition of his work.
