Joan Barbeta was formed in the Schools of Arts and Crafts of Barcelona and of Fine Arts of San Carlos in Valencia, and in 1940 he celebrated his first exhibition, which took place in the Layetanas Galleries of Barcelona. This exhibition was followed by others in various galleries, mainly in Barcelona. He also took part in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts in Madrid and Barcelona, and in 1943 he was appointed professor of artistic drawing at the School of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi (he obtained the position by competitive examination in 1952). Later he will occupy the chair of decorative painting, until in 1958 he is appointed director of the II Section of the School of Arts and Crafts. In the sixties he became technical curator of the Municipal Museums of Barcelona (1966), and in 1967 he was appointed technical director of the Museum of Modern Art of the same city. At the same time, Barbeta collaborated with various publications, held exhibitions, organized cultural events, gave lectures and produced critical catalogs, including "Modernism in Spain" and "Museums of Barcelona", published by the Directorate General of Fine Arts. He also took part in various national exhibitions, and after an absence from commercial galleries he exhibited again from 1980 onwards. In 1993 an anthological exhibition held at the Elizalde Cultural Center in Barcelona was dedicated to him as a tribute. He is currently represented in several public collections.
